Shalya Tantra meaning

Sushruta's first article discusses a wide range of surgical procedures that include how to treat different types of abscesses, fractures, internal and external injuries, complications during childbirth, and prevention of intestinal obstruction. In fact, Sushruta was the first surgeon to perform the operation! The use of many surgical instruments is also described in Sushruta Samhita. The instruments were made of wood, stone, or other similar materials.

The reason why Shalya Tantra is so popular is that it can provide faster relief compared to a slow recovery process from herbs or medicines. The famous Ayurvedic physician, Charaka, also recommends Shalya Tantra to treat certain ailments that require immediate attention; for example, haemorrhoids.

According to Sushruta, it is best to use the Shalya tantra when the physical problem is more than just a medical fix. In cases such as cysts, abscesses, enlarged lymph nodes, haemorrhoids, kidney and bladder stones, urinary retention and breast-related diseases, he advised the use of Shalya tantra. Treatment not only provides immediate relief to the sufferer but also helps in cases where the internal medicine fails to cure.
