What is Nighantu? निघंटु क्या है?

The Nighantus are the books with the collection of different words with it's meanings (Ekārtha-vāchi, Anekārtha-vāchi) is known as Nighantu. 

Yaskacharya wrote the Nirukta to Vedas for the meaning of different Vedic words and for it's style of pronounciation etc.,

In Ayurveda different Nighantus are explained with different descriptions. 

There are total 10 Nighantus described they are :
  1. Kayyadeva Nighantu or Pathyapathya-vibodhini
  2. Dhanwantari Nighantu
  3. Raja Nighantu by narhari pandit
  4. Madanphala Nighantu 
  5. Bhavaprakasha Nighantu 
  6. Paravarti Nighantu 
  7. Vallabha Nighantu
  8. Nighantu sangraha
  9. Nighantu ratnakar
  10. Shaligram Nighantu 
Nighantu word is derived from Vedic word - Nigam or Nighantu the meaning is Gudārtha-bodhaka, that gives the meaning of the words. 

The Namakarana, Utpatti, Paryäyavāchi shabda, specific derivations etc., details of different drugs are available in Nighantu hence the knowledge of Nighantu helps the student and and doctor a lot to understand  the science correctly.

"निघण्टु विना वैद्यो विद्वान् व्याकरणं विना ।
विनाऽभ्यासेन धनुष्कः त्रयो हास्यस्य भाजनम् ।।" (शालिग्रामनिघण्टु)
Means, Vaidya without the knowledge of Nighantu, Vidwān without the knowledge of Vyakarana, Dhanurvid without practice are useless.
